Plants Move In

Friday, May 29th, 2009

Started most of the plants for the garden from seed. Tomatoes (Jelly Bean and Beefsteak), Beans (Italian Green and Purple Green), Catnip, Basil, Cillantro, Marigold, Sun Flowers and Giant Pumpkin. I started some Stevia from seed but the plants were very weak. Not sure if I started them too early. Used the starter trays with domes to grow the seeds. Kept them inside for several weeks to get them to germinate. Move them out the garage and kept them under timed lighting until planting.

I did buy a Stevia plant and two Mr. Stripey Tomato plants. Next year I would simply purchase some tomato plants and start just the herbs and beans. I started some peter pepper plants and tobacco from seed. They will enter the garden in mid June.

I found a set of golf clubs during a Mojo the dog walk. The set is a beginner set; opened up the storage pocket on the bag and found a scorecard from the Country Club of Warczaw. Wonder if the clubs fell out of a plane? The set had one of the first metal head drivers (McHenry Metals, now Taylor Made) and a Sam Snead iron. The Sam Snead iron has no grooves, probably a niblick, used to chip onto a green. I’ve reshafted a number of golf clubs over the years, saved the safts and put them to use as props up some plants and fencing. I think Fujikura shafts are required for proper gardening.

My neighbor gave me a couple of tomato cages. I peeled open one and made a straight fence to support the beans. The other his holding up the Sun Flowers. I will make some cages for the new batch of tomatoes once they start their take-off of growth.

The Giant Pumpkins were placed outside of the garden boxes. Five plants in the space. We can see which one is strongest and make a cull. I will add more soil to the pumpkin patch to isolate them from the late summer rains.

The plants went in on Monday and the weather has been fine. All of the pumpkins look strong.

Memorial Weekend Dirt Bar-B-Que

Saturday, May 23rd, 2009

Found a Weber Bar-B-Que grill on the curb while walking the dog. Walked the dog and grill home. Gave the grill a clean-up and cooked up some H1N1 Brisket over Hickory coals. Had some Lagunitas beer, Censored Rich Copper Ale while watching the grill. The raspberry plants are taking off.

The work was moving the mix into the garden. Did a mix of peat moss, humus, soil and vermiculite. Built up a bed for some Giant Pumpkins that I started from seed. I rented a lawn plugger a few days earlier and took it for a ride around the lawn. Great upper body workout.

Garden Boxes

Saturday, April 11th, 2009

We were looking at the space in the yard and an adjustment to the land was needed. We have some nice raspberry plants. Why not extend the garden growing area? Laid out an arc to increase the planting space. Rented a tiller and gave the soil a mix.

Came across a good article: Garden Box Plan from Pioneer Woman Built some garden boxes and we moved some Hostas into place for the border. Started some seeds around the time of construction.

I ripped the satellite dish out of the garden area. We have not had paid TV for the past 18 months and we really don’t miss it. There are about 20 channels available over the air where I live so there is enough to watch and realize that the TV needs to be turned off. The only channel that does not come in strong is 2 (CBS), they show the Masters on the internet so the TV is really not needed. Full DTV transition takes place on June 12th so the CBS signal becomes stronger. Remind me on Black Friday to get an HDTV set and Apple Mac Mini for next winter’s viewing, all served through the inner web tubes. The neighbor got a laugh when he saw the satellite dish put out the curb.

The rain barrel is from the county. Cook county water district sells barrels once a month over in Skokie. I picked up two, put one by the new garden and the other on front corner of the house behind a bush. From Zappa: You look pretty sharp in those clothes, except when you get sprayed by a hose….
